The lesson I had to learn twice
Years ago I had an online jewelry business. I sold on other people's platforms and never built an email list. When people left those platforms, my customers left with them, and I had no way to reach a single one. That business closed.
You'd think I would have learned. But years later, I started an Instagram account and worked incredibly hard to grow it to 1,000 followers. I was posting several times a day, every day, and it wore me out completely.
Then I decided to change direction with my account. I believe Instagram's automated system mistook the change for someone taking over my account, and it shut the whole thing down. There was nothing I could do. All that hard work and every one of those followers, gone overnight.
Two businesses. Two audiences. Both gone, because I'd built them on someone else's land.
That's when I finally saw the light.
Then one person signed up
When I made my first freebie, I almost didn't share it. I'm a perfectionist, and I kept thinking, "Everyone already knows this. Who would want my freebie?"
It took me far too long to put it out there. When I finally did, it wasn't perfect. I shared one post in a Facebook group with a link to my signup page. One person signed up. Just one. And that was all it took to get me hooked.
For the first time, I had an audience nobody could take away from me. I could reach my people whenever I had something worth saying, and actually talk with them: ask questions, listen to what they were struggling with and create things that genuinely help.
Here's what I want every coach to know: your freebie doesn't have to be perfect. It has to be out there.
Because I've been burned out, too
There's so much noise online. Post more. Be everywhere. Build this funnel, learn that tool, try the next big strategy. I tried keeping up with all of it, and I ended up exhausted.
Here's what I believe now: when you're starting a business, you need focus and simplicity to avoid burning out.
If you try to do everything at once, nothing gets done well, and you end up more scattered than accomplished.
So I keep things simple. One list. A simple weekly email. A few systems that do the heavy lifting.
And I'll be honest with you: I'm not a guru who has it all figured out. I'm a few steps ahead of you on the same path, and I share exactly what's working for me, so you can skip the mistakes I made.
A few things about me
Santorini is my happy place
Greece is my dream vacation, and I can't wait to go back. I love it so much, I based my whole brand on it.
Forever an 80s girl
80s music and movies are my thing, which is why my reels usually have an 80s soundtrack. John Candy and Goldie Hawn comedies always make me laugh.
Pretty in Pink
My all-time favorite movie is still Pretty in Pink. So yes, all the pink around here is no accident. 🩷
A house full of fur
I love cats and dogs, and I share my home with five cats. It's never quiet, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
Family first
I'm a mom to two teenagers, a boy and a girl, and I've been with my partner since I was 19. That's almost 30 years together.
